BUT HE DID STAY AT A HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS LAST NIGHT

Links to JonBenet Are Unclear

The teacher arrested in the 1996 slaying says he was with her when she died. Some have doubts.

BOULDER, Colo. — The complex portrait that began to emerge Thursday of John Mark Karr, the American arrested this week in the 1996 slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, suggested he was a troubled schoolteacher with a record that included child pornography charges but no clear links to the victim or even to Colorado, the state where the crime occurred.

A calm, neatly dressed Karr, appearing at a news conference at a Bangkok, Thailand, detention facility, told reporters he was with the 6-year-old girl when she died.

The trend toward casual dress has gone so far that Matt Smith, a 27-year-old Century City lawyer, is on a quest to establish "Tie Tuesday." He would like to wear a suit to work but knows he'd be ridiculed. Instead, Smith dons a tie every Tuesday and hopes other men in his office will follow. So far a couple have.

"It's just something fun," he said.

Q: HOW HOW WAS IT? A: WHY, IT WAS SO HOT I SAW A DOG CHASING A CAT AND THEY WERE BOTH WALKING TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM TO GET TREATMENT FOR HEAT STROKE

Hard to shake big bake

Temps to hit 100

The heat will be on today, as temperatures are predicted to soar past the 100-degree mark - setting the stage for one of the hottest days in New York history.

The National Weather Service is calling for record highs of 100 to 105 degrees, which would break today's record of 100 degrees.

It could even approach the city's all-time high of 106, set back on July 9, 1936.
